In The Hands of God

In The Hands of God

Who is the God who

has taken away my work?

Who are You who

has told me not to move?

What will I do and

how will I stay sane

If I cannot slave away?

What shall I control

and of what can I worry?

What will I think about

If my life is no longer my worry?

And my goodness is no longer my glory?

May Your glory be awesome!

For I have been stripped of all else to look upon.

May You be amazing!

For I have nothing else to know.

May You fill well!

For I have heard a powerful, strange song

that has left me all empty.

What is this gospel that has taken away the might of my arm?

Who is this God who has stripped me of my planning?

What shall I do with this mind and this time?

You stand alone, all my other options you have consumed

and cast aside.

Lord I have heard of You

Now, I must see that you’re amazing!

For you have left nothing else for me.

You are a sufficient additive.

Show me what kind of a sum.

A terrifying gospel

That leaves me powerless in Your hands.

with nothing to do

but to rest in you.

When You said to Israel,

“I will make you new

And this will all be

Despite what you do”

I said amen, with tears in my eyes.

But now I’m in dread

of the God who has said

it is finished.

Oh may You be mine

And may You be gentle.

For I have nothing left.

But I dread the God who consumes.

I have known You as Love.

I know you as conqueror.

Sing soft to me.

For I have lost myself

And I know not what to do in You.

What knowledge could prepare me?

Rejoice rejoice! Your light has risen upon you!

But here as Your clay, I pray you are safe.

HIM:

What you fear

is your peace at last.

Worry not for the future

Pay no penance for the past.

Dwell here as you are

In the form you are molded so far.

And be in my hands

and know who I am.

What shall I control

and of what can I worry?

What will I think about

If my life is no longer my worry?

And my goodness is no longer my glory?

Lord You better be amazing!

For you have left nothing else for me.

A terrifying gospel

That leaves me powerless in Your hands.

I got up to throw away a crumb and You had spring cleaned the kitchen!
